Crazy times

I admit it now, I have no pictures for this post, just updates. Last week was spent in Kerala India, the only region in India where there are more girls born than boys (demonstating a  natural sex ratio), it contains 2.76% of Indias population, its population growth rate is much lower than average (lower than the US), literacy rates are some of the highest in the world (91%) and where it is a matriarchal society.
We attended classes at the Sacred Heart College of Kerala and went sight seeing. Our classes consisted of bio technology courses involving algae as the energy of the future, aquaculture, pathology, and talks about people research. I met some great people and learned a lot. Where we went sight seeing is in the back waters, went to a Kerala arts center, a world art exhibition (however sadly it was in the middle of being taken down so only Indian artist remained), and several huge antique dealers (they had horses made of wood coated with bronze larger than a mini van!).
The arts center was fantastic, we got to see traditional dances learn a little about the history, and see how the make up is done. The make up consisted of gluing cardboard slices to the dances face than face painting over everything. Then they wore these costume that are so heavy and hot that the make the dance experience a trance like state where the god guides them in the dance. They also use facial expressions as the central part of the dance which makes it all the more intense, and slightly creepy.
The world art exhibition was a bit weird because all was left were bits and pieces, there was one piece that stuck with me because it freaked me out. It was an instalation. The room was sealed off by black curtains then when you enter there is a large box (about 9ft tall, 12 feet wide, 12 feet long) that has doors. The walls of the box are covered with bug plugs that are turned on so the room stinks of burning mosquito repellent that makes you feel kind of high. Then you walk into the door way of the box and inside the box is a cage. The cage has two clay feet that are made to look collage like and where the shine bone should extend there are two little Matrimandirs.
Well thats all I will try and post more tomorrow we start the art classes. I currently don't have my computer so I am borrowing a friends. When I get my computer back I promise pictures and hopefully a post every few days!

Nancy you are more than welcome to use any of my pictures for paintings or anything you like!
